Transport

The Regulations covering the transport of dangerous goods are very different from those covering Supply. There are also separate arrangements for each of the four modes: Road, Rail, Air and Sea. These pages explore each of these in turn, looking at the situation in the UK and International transport.

Road/Rail UK

Dangerous goods transport in the UK is regulated by The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2007. Further information and guidance can be obtained from the Department for Transport's Dangerous Goods Transport website and from HSE’s Carriage of Dangerous Goods website.

Emergency Action Codes (Hazchem Codes) are published in the Dangerous Goods Emergency Action Code List 2007.

European Road Transport

  • International journeys by road through Europe are covered by the ADR Regulations. The ADR web site includes the text of the regulations (ADR 2007) and information on forthcoming changes

International Rail Transport

  • International journeys by rail are covered by the RID regulations. Information on RID is available from the OTIF web sites and from the UN web site for the joint ADR/RID working party.
