What is REACH?
The new Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation came into force on 1 June 2007.
Key points of REACH:
- Responsibility for the safe use of chemicals transfers from government to industry
- Applies to all substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year
- Affects everyone in the supply chain - manufacturers, importers and their customers
- Hazard assessment, risk assessment, product classification and labelling information are required
- The greater the tonnage, the greater the information required
- Restricts the use of harmful chemicals
What can I do now?
- Understand your inventory & how your customers use your products
- Assess which of your products fall into scope of the regulations
- Identify the information required and cost of obtaining it
- Review regulatory documents (eg Safety Data Sheets)
- Ensure your suppliers will register the products you use
