Defra launches consultation period on UK REACH registration deadline extensions

Defra launches consultation period on UK REACH registration deadline extensions
07 July 2022

The UK government have agreed to work with stakeholders to explore an alternative transitional registration model, which includes a review of the current full registration deadlines.

Earlier this year, in response to ongoing discussions between industry and government over the practical implications of the implementation of UK REACH and the impact on GB businesses, George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, confirmed in a letter to industry that the UK Government will launch a consultation on the UK REACH implementation model. You can read more on that here

In addition, it was recognised by government that any changes to the UK REACH model would require extensions to the transitional deadlines in order to allow sufficient time for legislative and operational changes to be made, giving organisations longer to comply.

Defra have proposed 3 options for deadline extensions:

  • Do Nothing – No changes to the current submission deadlines. (27 October 2023, 27 October 2025, and 27 October 2027).
  • Option 1 – To extend all current submission deadlines for each tonnage band by 3 years.
  • Option 2 – To extend the first submission deadline by 3 years, the second by 2 years, and the third by 1 year.

Defra have now opened the consultation on possible deadline extensions and have invited organisations to submit their views on the proposed options.

The consultation is available here and is open until 11:45pm on 01 September 2022.
